Naming is a very powerful thing. In some cultures naming ceremonies are sanctified by sacred ceremony and great celebration. Sometimes I think we are too flip in this country about the importance of a name. We are marking a child for life.

It was one of the most powerful things I have ever done to choose my own name, one that meant a great deal to me spiritually. It changed me in more ways than I can say. People told me they thought that I was everything from crazy to ridiculous to change my name. My mother took great offense and was very hurt as if I did it to reject her and the name she had given me. But as I explained to her again and again, I didn't do it to hurt anybody, I did it to help me gain a new, stronger, Self, and it empowered me tremendously as a woman.

I hope all is going well in your world. I send you peace, and love...

Rev. And it made me very sad, and made me cringe in places because I would like to feel like in this day and age -- and I understand that there will, sadly, always be racists and biggots -- we were past, or mostly past, such cruelty. I pray that some day we can transcend this unconscionable bigotry.

Your post was very powerful, and enlightening. Keep on keepin' on honey. Those who have things of great import to say are not always popular, but they are necessary and we need them. I applaud you.

Rev. I did not know it would end up so popular--I have gotten literally thousands and thousands of hits on it--classes have used it, it was linked everywhere (Jezebel, MetaFilter, etc). I've had at least 31,000 hits on it.

The experiment super-linking has taught me a lot, because some people were also pretty nasty and doubtful about it and thought I was lying. (People bring themselves to any discussion!) Others were kind and generous, and I made new friends.

As you can see, 127 comments--and sometimes I still get them.

And now, for you: On Having a Black Name.

NamasteDaisy Deadheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17993200276152025235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567564540904111532.post-30063790586315162062009-02-28T17:25:00.000-05:002009-02-28T17:25:00.000-05:00Dorothy, how kind of you to write...I also love yo...Dorothy, how kind of you to write...

I also love your blog. My son had been pushing for Sakura for our second child, and he was once again in favor of this name. My wife thought it might give him a special connection, so she went for it. I liked the idea of calling my daughter "cherry blossom", because it seemed so hopeful. With my son ii was the connection to the past; with my second daughter it was a desire to have an interesting life. I wonder what they will make of their names after reading this post.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567564540904111532.post-68442969119622910452009-02-28T01:44:00.000-05:002009-02-28T01:44:00.000-05:00Most Reverend of Mothers...I am wearing this huge ...Most Reverend of Mothers...
I am wearing this huge smile on my face as I finish reading your story and type this to you.

excellent. excellent. excellent.

May you continue to delight and inspire your readers, and I include myself in that number.
----<--@

Blessed Be,
VSDVictoria SkyDancerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17575030189374840672noreply@blogger.com
